Natural shale sharpening stones from the Ardennes region of Belgium. Belgian Blue and it’s finer ‘Coticule’ cousin get their cutting ability from garnets that will cut more aggressively with a slurry and finer with only water and light pressure.
This stone provides several different finishes but is analogous to a 3-4000 grit Japanese stone however the scratches are different than natural Japanese stones, they are a bit deeper. For those familiar with Japanese natural stones this might be analogous to the grit of a fine aoto stone. But different.
These are often used as a pre-polishing stone for razors or as a fine finish on knives or tools that benefit from a fine finish.
